Friday’s Meeting

金曜日のミーティング

For Friday the 8^th, we’ll get a chance to learn about Valentine’s Day in Japan and the United States. You’ll see that there are some fairly significant differences in how the holiday is approached in each country. After that, we might just play a few games that bring boys and girls together and maybe get us a little closer than we usually are.

バレンタインデーまであともう少し！このイベントにあまずっぱい、もしくはしょっぱい思い出をもっている人も多いのではないでしょうか。さて、来る2月8日(金)のミーティングでは、日米のバレンタインの大きな違いについて紹介します。そして、男の子と女の子の距離が少し縮まるような、そんなアクティビティーもそのあとに予定しています。

Michigan Japan Club Soccer Tournament

ミシガン州日本会サッカー・トーナメント

Each year, the people from Japan Clubs from four different Michigan Universities—WMU, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, and Michigan State University—come together for a fun-oriented soccer tournament. This year we’d like to take as big a group as possible. Anyone can go; you don’t need to be good at soccer, you just need to want to have a good time! You can even join just to support and cheer on your friends.

This year’s tournament will be in April, which gives us some time to practice. So, if you’re looking for a good reason to exercise, this can be a fun way to do that with friends. Once we form a group, we can arrange times when we can go work out together at the rec center.

Look for a sign-up sheet, possibly as early as this week’s meeting!

毎年恒例となっている、ミシガン四大学日本会対抗サッカートーナメントが今年も行われます。参加チームはWMU, Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, and Michigan State Universityの各大学の日本会。我がWMU日本会も総力を結集してぜひ大会に臨もうと考えています。　サッカーしたことない？関係ありません。サッカー経験者？ヒーローになって下さい。スポーツは好きじゃない？応援しましょう。

今年のトーナメントは四月に行われます。レクセンターでの練習の日程はこれから参加者の希望を考慮して決めます。興味のある方、次回のミーティングでぜひサインアップしてください。

We’ve established a new website. Our goal is for this to become the main place for Japan Club information and activity. The site is a blog format set up through WordPress, which allows anyone to sign up for a username. If you do this, you will be allowed to make comments on posts, and, if you ask Yuuya nicely, you can even post your own entries. The URL is http://wmujc.wordpress.com/

In the near future, I will be changing the format of our newsletter and providing a Japanese Language version as well. I will send and English language, text-only version through Facebook, but my hope is that everyone will recognize the hard work of the newsletter writers and see the finalized version. And this brings me to my next bit of news

また、近日中に、会報のフォーマットを一新、日本語バージョンの会報も配信します。従来どおり、Facebookを通して英語でのテキストスタイルの会報は配信されますが、ぜひこの新しいホームページで完全版Newsletterをチェックしてみてください。コンセプトは「Newsletter Growth」。進化した会報を、楽しみにしてください。

進化する会報

I would like to make the newsletter something for more people to get involved in. So for now, I am recruiting writers and artists. In addition to the usual newsletter content, I would like to have one or two feature articles about Japan, WMU, or Kalamazoo (or anything, really, that’s somehow relevant to our group) for each week. Additionally, it would be nice to have some artists provide graphics for the new newsletter.

This will accompany the change in format mentioned above. I plan to alter the look of the newsletter. I want to change it to a PDF magazine-like format.

As for writers, I will accept articles in English or Japanese from anyone. However, I may return them with comments before publishing them, and I will only include one or two each week (this number may change if I receive a large number of exceptionally-written articles).

For artists, on the other hand, I would like a few permanent designers to make cover work and images specific to the feature articles. If you would like to contribute as an artist, please prepare a casual portfolio for me to look at.

I’ll mention all of this again at Friday’s meeting.

会報をより魅力的なものにするため、現在、サイトで配信する会報を作るメンバーを募集中です。従来の内容に加え、新しい会報では、日本、WMU、カラマズー等の私たちに関する情報を毎週提供しようと考えています。さらに、PDFを使った雑誌形式のものにする予定です。そこで、記事を書くライターと、グラフィックを作ることに興味のある人を捜しています。

ライターに関しては、英語・日本語どちらでも構いません。全ての人の投稿を受けつけます。しかしそのまますぐ配信というほど出版の世界は甘くありません。配信の前にはGregからのコメントが添えられた返信、さらにその中から1つか2つの記事が選ばれます。（記事が多数の場合は増える可能性あり。）

その点、グラフィックデザイナーに関しては、数人の固定のデザイナーに記事のデザインを頼みたいと考えています。興味のある方は、ぜひ簡単なポートフォリオ（作品）を用意して、私に送ってください。

これに関しては、次回のミーティングでもう一度紹介します。

Conversation Partner Program

（日本人のメンバーへの特別なメッセージ）

I wanted to mention the conversation partner program again. Last week I called for volunteers, but only two people sent me messages. So at this week’s meeting, I will have a sign-up sheet for Japanese people who are interested. Here’s some information about it again:

The conversation partner program would be an effort on the part of Japan Club to contribute to Japanese language studies at WMU. I want to establish a system where small groups with a small ration of Americans to Japanese. My goal is to create a more intimate and comfortable setting for both Japanese and Americans to learn language.

I’m happy with the enthusiasm everyone shows for the language tables, but I feel that sometimes the best way to learn language is through smaller groups or one-on-one interaction. That’s why I’d like to establish a system that’s mutually beneficial for Japanese and American students alike.

カンバセーションパートナーについて、現在数人のボランティアが集まりましたが、更なる希望者を募るべく、次回のミーティングでサインアップシートを用意したいと考えています。

カンバセーションパートナープログラムは、日本会のWMUの日本語教育への貢献の一部となるものです。まずは、少人数のアメリカの学生と日本の学生のグループを作り、気軽で親しみやすい語学実践の場を作ることを考えています。

少人数・もしくは一対一での会話は、言葉を学ぶ上で、そして学生双方にとっても、とても有意義なものになると考えています。
